In Askew’s drawings, human and animal hybrids, Christ-like figures, dogs with gnashing teeth and bare carcasses all come together in surreal worlds where viewers are confronted with a marriage of alluring textures and grotesque imagery. Askew believes that our primal, natural instincts and our desire to become more civilized are at war. Her exquisite and meticulously detailed drawings explore this concept by investigating the war between our sexual desires, bodily functions, nature and each other.

Brown’s work is often situated in urban and rural landscapes in order to question human relationships with the natural world. In this new series, he explores the controversial practice of mountaintop removal coal mining that is now prevalent throughout Appalachia.
