On Friday, January 7th at the Alton Ellis/ Trench Town Community Center in Kingston, Jamaica, the film "Born in Trench Town," was shown to an enthusiastic crowd of over one hundred and fifty local residents. Kids, adults, Sewanee students and staff gathered to view the film, produced by Professor Greg Pond. The film not only captures contemporary life in the neighborhood but conveys an accurate historical perspective of West Kingston during the 1963-1980 period. It was well received and the residents applauded the efforts of the producer.
A fifteen year history of engagement in this neighborhood, made this evening very special. This film represents an artistic production that the members of Trench Town Development Association can use to further develop their historic musical heritage. This is the fiftieth anniversary year of Jamaican independence. We hope that we can be a part of that celebration by promoting this documentary film. - Dixon Myers, Director of University Outreach
