a collection of mixed media landscapes that reverses layers of experience. revealing and exposing that what is hidden below the surface, this body of work confronts what usually is unspoken and even unrealized. these painting acknowledge the mundane ordered constructed day to day, moment to moment interactions but emphasizes what lies beneath.

squiggly wiggly demon hair

squiggly wiggly demon hair, wangechi mutu, 2004

ink on mylar with collaged images

i went to the frist in nashville and got to see one of wangechi mutu’s pieces of work. i think i stood in front of it for about 30 min. the security guard kept checking on me and walking past me. i think what struck me the most with this piece in particular was the use of layering. the hair acted like a bush of thorns or at least a barrier that was masking,  obscuring and in some ways protecting a vulnerable inside.
